The two groups of temperature sensors most used in industrial electrical temperature measurement technology are:

  • Resistance thermometers (RTD)
  • Thermocouples (TC)


In the former, the measurement is based on the temperature-related change in the resistance of precious metals, while in the latter, thermal values are determined based on temperature differences between the measuring point and a reference point.

Resistance thermometers ensure a high level of reproducibility with the smallest deviations in the measurement results. Platinum sensors offer the best long-term stability. The chemical insensitivity of this precious metal reduces the risk of contamination through oxidation and other chemical influences, even at very low and very high temperatures.

Thermocouples can be used in a much wider temperature range than resistance thermometers. They are more robust and less sensitive to mechanical stress, and can be made extremely compact. Very small measurement points can also be integrated into the tightest of spaces. Another advantage of this type of sensor is its very good response time, which is usually shorter than that of resistance thermometers.
